The story last night, February 23, 2009, I was on twitter watching all the chatter about the Kindle 2 shipping over a glass of wine. There was some confusion by folks who thought that you had to get your content from Amazon and I pointed folks to sites like feedbooks where you can download public domain and creative commons licensed books for ebook readers like the Kindle.

As one glass of wine became 2 I started to think, you know what would be a good idea, a book club for CC and PD works that are available for the Kindle. I did some googling around and didn't see what I was looking for. I did find out that domain squatters owned kindlebookclub.com, .org, and .net.

On the third (and final) glass of wine I said to myself, "Self, you're a programmer, you pride yourself in your Drupal knowledge, you can build such a site". I realized that the kindle is a mobile device (remember there were 3 glasses of wine here) and kindlebookclub.mobi is available.

An hour later we have the beginnings of a site. There's a lot to add (user profiles and forums are on top of the list). But this is a start at something.

This morning I woke up to find it wasn't a dream, I built the site.

So here's the deal, once a week I'll suggest a book available in the Creative Commons or Public Domain and provide a link to the book in kindle format. Feel free to read it and we'll discuss it in the comments. If you'd like to suggest a book or just drop a line there's a contact link over on the right, feel free t use it.
